Description:The hands of this produce shopper were holding up a green tomato, as it was inspected by a potential mobile produce market buyer. After having made their selections, these shoppers would then place them into a yellow plastic hand-held basket, as they made their way to checkout.

Currently, tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables eaten by Americans. Tomatoes are members of the fruit family, but they are served and prepared as a vegetable. This is why most people consider them a vegetable and not a fruit. Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin A.
Individuals should meet the following recommendations as part of a healthy eating pattern while staying within their calorie needs. The complete list may be found in the HHS Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010:

- -Increase vegetable and fruit intake.

- Eat a variety of vegetables, especially dark-green and red and orange vegetables and beans and peas.

- Consume at least half of all grains as whole grains. Increase whole-grain intake by replacing refined grains with    whole grains.

- Choose foods that provide more potassium, dietary fiber, calcium, and vitamin D, which are nutrients of concern in    American diets. These foods include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and milk and milk products.
