Description:The woman depicted here in her kitchen was in the process of cutting up a head of iceberg lettuce atop her clean, clutter-free countertop. She had placed a washed cutting board down on the counter, and a fresh towel beneath, in order to absorb excess water dripping from the freshly-rinsed produce. Note that the lettuce shreds were being placed into a clean glass bowl. It is very important to prepare foods in as clean an environment as possible, thereby, minimizing the possibility of introducing foodborne contaminants into the food preparation process.
Some sink area safety tips offered by the Centers for Disease Control include:

- Thoroughly wash hands prior to food preparation, or eating.

- Clean cutting boards, knives, and countertops to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.

- Learn if your drinking water is safe. If you use a private well, have the water tested for contaminants.
