Description:At this point in a young girl’s examination, a male health care clinicial was in the process of examining the inside of her oral cavity, tongue, and pharynx, for the presence of any pathologic abnormalities. A tongue depressor and small flashlight was used to facilitate the physician in his exam.
Many ailments initially manifest as inflammatory processes involving the oral cavity including pharyngitis, i.e., inflammation of the pharynx, glossitis, i.e., inflammation of the tongue, gingivitis, i.e., inflammation of the gums, as well as sinusitis, and laryngitis, just to name a few of the more commonly known illnesses. By performing an oral exam, an experienced health care practitioner can often decipher the symptoms observed, which will aid in the recommendation of a next step when choosing an appropriate therapy.
