This 1981 image depicts a villager in an unknown location, who was lifting the hem of his wrap, showing his right leg, thereby, revealing the lesions on his extremity due to a condition referred to as dracunculiasis, or more commonly known as Guinea worm disease. This infection is caused by the Guinea worm, Dracunculus medinensis, and is a preventable infection due to the ingestion of contaminated drinking water.
