This historic image was captured during the 1968, 25 Millionth Smallpox Vaccination Ceremony, in Accra Ghana. In the center was former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director, Dr. David Sencer. At this ceremony, Rebecca Ansah Asamoah was designated the world’s 25-millionth smallpox vaccinee, and presented honors to the scientific community responsible for this achievement. In 1977, the last case of naturally-contracted smallpox was recorded in Somalia.
