From 1970, this image depicted the mouth and oral cavity of a 2-year-old Oregonian child, who after having received a smallpox vaccination, sustained what is termed an accidental implantation of the newly-introduced vaccinia virus. Accompanying this phenomenon, the child also developed hand, foot and mouth disease. Note that the tongue displayed a maculopapular lesion attributed to this accidental implantation.
