From the “Illustrated Manual for the Recognition and Diagnosis of Certain Animal Diseases”, published in 1982, by the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot and Mouth Disease, this photograph depicts a view of a bovine’s coat, displaying areas of alopecia, in areas where scabs have dropped off, due to a case of bovine herpes dermopathic (BHD) disease. “BHD disease is made up of a group of syndromes characterized by pyrexia and the formation of cutaneous lesions. BHD is caused by a number of herpes viruses that are similar in their biological, immunological, and physiochemical characteristics.”
