Caption:
From the “Illustrated Manual for the Recognition and Diagnosis of Certain Animal Diseases”, published in 1982, by the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot and Mouth Disease, this photograph depicts a close view of a bovine’s muzzle, revealing a number of lesions on the snout, and around the nares. The animal was ill with what was determined to be lumpy skin disease (LSD). Caused by a Poxviridae family member, this virus causes the eruption of skin nodules to take place over all regions of the bovine body. See PHIL 12921, for an even closer view of these nodules.
