Using immunohistochemical (IHC) technique, this photomicrograph of a human tissue specimen, revealed some of the histopathologic changes associated with a Nipah virus infection, and its pathogenic influence specifically, upon the vascular elements, including the formation of a thrombus, and degenerative breakdown of the endothelial layer. Infection with Nipah virus has been associated with an encephalitis, characterized by fever and drowsiness and more serious central nervous system disease, such as coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing.
