Using immunohistochemical (IHC) technique, this photomicrograph of a sample of lung tissue from an unknown animal, which included the trachea and bronchi, revealed histopathologic changes due to a Nipah virus infection. Infection with Nipah virus has been associated with an encephalitis, characterized by fever and drowsiness and more serious central nervous system disease, such as coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing.
