Caption:
Using immunohistochemical (IHC) technique, this photomicrograph revealed some of the histopathologic changes associated with a Nipah virus infection, in this case affecting a human patient, resulting in the formation of a syncytial cell, described as a giant, multinucleated endothelial cell, seen here, in the center of the image. Infection with Nipah virus has been associated with an encephalitis characterized by fever and drowsiness, and more serious central nervous system disease, including coma, seizures, and inability to maintain breathing.
