Description:A closer view of PHIL 12395, this photograph depicts the colonial morphology displayed by Gram-negative, Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria, which was grown on a medium of sheep’s blood agar (SBA), for a 48 hour time period, at a temperature of 37°C. See PHIL 12394 for a view of these bacterial colonies after only 24 hours of growth.
Usually, this bacterium inoculates a human being by hitching a ride on an airborne microdroplet that the recipient inhales. Subsequently, this pathogen colonizes the mucosal lining of the respiratory tract, with a predilection for the ciliated epithelial cells, which they immobilizing, and destroy. The destruction of the cilia causes a build-up of mucous, and debris, thereby, producing ensuing inflammation, and coughing.
