This historic 1963 photograph depicted laboratorian, Gail Wathen, as she was performing an examination of an agar culture Petri dish, which had been inoculated with Salmonella typhi, and typed using bacteriophage methods. Modern day protocols now call for the laboratorian executing such tasks, to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety goggles, gloves, and a face mask. Personal protective equipment, or PPE, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, is “specialized clothing or equipment, worn by an employee for protection against infectious materials”.
