Caption:
This photograph depicts a number of Io moth, Automeris io, larvae. During its developmental stages, or instars, the Io moth larva undergoes changes, becoming a stinging, or urticating caterpillar. The spines on these larvae are extremely sharp, and release their toxin with very little stimulation. Reactions to the toxin range from a stinging pain and swelling, to anaphylactic shock, and death. See PHIL 12063 through 12066, for images depicting the hands of a patient stung by one of these caterpillars.
