Under a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph of a Florida dolphin wet-mount tissue sample, revealed some of the histopathologic changes associated with what was determined to be a case of lobomycosis, due to the fungus, Lacazia loboi, formerly Loboa loboi. Usually, lobomycosis is seen in humans and dolphins. Histopathologic characteristics included the presence of numbers of yeast-like cells, which morphologically were large, ranging in size from 5µm to 12µm, and were thick-walled. As seen in this case, you’ll note the presence of tubular interconnection between these cells.
