This historic image, depicted a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) laboratory technician, who was in the process of carrying out a laboratory experiment within the confines of what is referred to as a negatively pressurized flow hood. The negative pressure within the hood pulls air in, rather than letting it, and any pathogens, flow back into the laboratory environment. At this point in her activity, the technician was pipetting an unidentified solution into the wells of a microtiter plate, while she was dressed in the requisite personal protective equipment (PPE), which in this case was a full blue colored, airtight body suit. Note the red tube on the left, carrying fresh, oxygenated air into the laboratorian’s suit.
