Caption:
This photomicrograph of a blood smear sample reveals the presence of a Babesia sp. tetrad trophozoite, which resembles that of the malarial parasite, P. falciparum. Though developmentally, the Babesia spp. organisms resemble Plasmodium falciparum, these parasites present several distinguishing features, including more variance in shape and size, and they do not produce pigment.
