Description:This 1972 photograph depicts two Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis bacterial cultures grown on blood agar medium for 48 hours.
Gram-negative B. fragilis, though a commensal bacteria that normally lives in the human gastrointestinal tract, can become pathogenic under circumstances involving disruption of the normal intestinal mucosa such as trauma, or surgery.
