This 1974 photograph depicted an elderly Bengali man standing in front of a number of children in a Bangladesh village. The man displayed a large goiter, and was quite thin, both conditions most probably due to his poor diet, which was low in dietary iodine. This image was captured during the worldwide smallpox eradication program, by a member of the Bangladesh Smallpox Eradication Team, while in that region.
