Description:This 1971 image depicted a frontal view of a Petri dish culture in which a small colony of Prototheca moriformis algal organisms had been cultivated.
Members of the genus Prototheca are achlorophyllic, which means that these organisms, like fungi, contain no chlorophyll. Documented cases of protothecosis usually involve P. wickerhamii, and sometimes P. zopfii, and resemble infections caused by fungal organisms.
