Description:Magnified 1125X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of a macrophage containing a single nucleus.
The macrophage is the cell line responsible for the body’s clean up, and can both phagocytize, i.e., engulf particlulates such as bacteria, and necrotic tissues, as well as pinocytize, i.e., engulf extracellular fluids along with any small adjacent particulates. They are normally static, but when stimulated by the inflammatory process, become quite mobile.
