This female smallpox vaccine recipient had a history of eczema, which is a pre-existing condition that would make a vaccinee more susceptible to manifesting a severe adverse reaction upon inoculation. Note the facial maculopapular lesions, bad enough to cause closure of her right eye, which can be seen in PHIL 10451 depicting a frontal view of this woman’s face.
