Caption:
This 1960 photograph depicted the left foot of a bedridden elderly male who was at first glance, thought to be suffering with a case of smallpox, but was subsequently determined to be a case of chickenpox, also known as varicella. Note how these varicella skin lesions closely resemble the maculopapular pustules manifested in smallpox.

Chickenpox is a disease caused by the varicella zoster virus, also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3), while smallpox is caused by the variola virus.
