This photograph depicted microbiologist, and former director of Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Laboratory Division, Dr. Charles C. Shepard. It was through the diligent efforts of doctors Sheppard, and cohort microbiologist Joseph McDade (PHIL 10134), which led to the 1977 discovery of the initially illusive bacterium, Legionella pneumophila, the cause of ‘Legionnaires' disease’.
