Caption:
Under a magnification of 78X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image depicted the surface of the left compound eye (bottom), and head of an unidentified hornet found in the suburbs of Decatur, Georgia. From this perspective, you are able to see where the eye attached to the insect’s setae-covered head. This eye was one of a pair, which along with other sensorial structures such as these hair-like setae, provided the hornet with data indicative of changes encountered in its environment such as chemical, thermal, and tactile queues.
