In this 2007 photograph, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) biologist, Damian Danavall was shown setting up a liquid handling robot, to perform a quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis, able to detect the presence of herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2). PCR produces large amounts of replicated DNA, or RNA molecular sequences. Using this process, very small amounts of these nucleic acid molecules can be analyzed upon the completion of the replication process. Mr. Danavall is a National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) staff member, who works inside the center’s Laboratory Reference and Research Branch (LRRB).
