In this 2007 photograph, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Biologist, Damien Danavall was shown setting up a liquid handling robot, to perform a quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis, able to detect the presence of herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2). PCR produces large amounts of replicated DNA, or RNA molecular sequences. Using this process, very small amounts of these nucleic acid molecules can be analyzed.
