This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health', to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space. Here, Hygeia was featured as the cover art for the CDC’s journal, Preventing Chronic Disease, July 2007, as emblematic of new media, and new issues confronting traditional public health practice. See PHIL 10002, 10005, 10007, 10008, 10009, 10011, 10012, 10013, 10014, and 10016 for additional images of Ms. Philo. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL.
