This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. This image was created in preparation for the Virtual Worlds 2007, Spring Conference, where, Ms. Philo’s creator, Dr. John Anderton, explained the CDC’s interest in virtual world development. Designed to be the modern muse of health, Hygeia serves as lead health spokesperson, and health educator in this new virtual space. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL.
