|Description:||This computer-generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world of Second Life. This was the third design stage of the avatar. Customizing an avatar’s appearance is a key aspect to community acceptance. This image shows both a more corporate look to the avatar, as well as a real world image of the CDC’s marquee, while placing them into the virtual context in this visual experiment. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health”, to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space. CDC’s presence in the online virtual world “Second Life” launched in August, 2006. Dr. Anderton designed the initial CDC space using in-world, i.e., Second Life, tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL. CDC public health posters from the first 6 decades of the CDC’s existence were displayed in the “Public Health Poster of the Week” billboard feature, which was updated weekly from August, through the end of December, 2006.
