This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. This is the third design stage of the avatar. This stage depicted both a more corporate look to the avatar, as well as a real world image of the CDC’s marquee, while inside the virtual context in this visual experiment. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health’, to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space. See PHIL 10002, 10005, 10007, 10009, 10011, 10012, 10013, 10014, 10015, and 10016 for additional images of Ms. Philo CDC’s presence in the online virtual world, Second Life, launched in August 2006. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL.
