This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. This is the second design stage of the avatar. She was metaphorically born on July 13, 2006, coinciding with the CDC’s 60th anniversary. Dr. John Anderton designed Ms. Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health’, to serve as the modern muse of health, and as lead health spokesperson and health educator, in this new virtual space. Customizing an avatar’s appearance is a key aspect to community acceptance, and at this second design stage, appealing to the median age of 35 for Second Life participants, was the driving force behind this new look. It also added the official CDC logo to the visual design, as a way to connect the CDC brand to the experimental presence inside the virtual world.
