|Description:||This computer-generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world of Second Life. This is the second design-stage of the avatar. She was metaphorically “born” on July 13, 2006, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of CDC. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health”, to be the modern muse of health to serve as lead health spokesperson, and health educator in this new virtual space.|
Customizing an avatar’s appearance is a key aspect to community acceptance, and at this second design-stage, appealing to the median age of 35 for Second Life participants was the driving force behind this new look. It also added the official CDC logo to the visual design, as a way to connect the CDC brand to the experimental presence inside the virtual world. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health”, to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space.
