This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. This is the first design stage of the avatar. She was metaphorically born on July 13, 2006, coinciding with the CDC’s 60th anniversary. Dr. John Anderton designed Ms. Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health’, to serve as the modern muse of health, and as lead health spokesperson and health educator, in this new virtual space. See PHIL 10002, 10005, 10008, 10009, 10011, 10012, 10013, 10014, 10015, and 10016 for additional images of Ms. Philo. CDC’s presence in the online virtual world, Second Life, launched in August 2006. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL.
