CDC’s presence in the online virtual world, Second Life, launched in August 2006. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL. In response to the CDC’s successful 2006 Fall Health Fair, Dr. Anderton designed a portable exhibit space featuring CDC content that could be set up anywhere in Second Life, in order to conduct health promotion campaigns. In response to an invitation from the Good Samaritan group, Anderton deployed the exhibit at a trade show with a holiday theme. Note CDC’s avatar, Hygeia Philo, who here was sporting a Santa hat, as well as the featured seasonal influenza vaccination banner, with its hyperlink to more information regarding where one could receive flu shots. See PHIL 10002, 10007, 10008, 10009, 10011, 10012, 10013, 10014, 10015, and 10016 for additional images of Ms. Philo.
