CDC’s presence in the online virtual world, Second Life, launched in August 2006. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL. To increase CDC’s Second Life presence, Dr. Anderton set up a Fall Health Fair, scheduled to run the week before Halloween. He redesigned the space to include a much richer visual design, borrowing graphics from the CDC’s 2006 American Public Health Association (APHA) exhibit for the walls, and adding interactive exhibits on CDC APHA presentations, carbon monoxide prevention, safe Halloween trick-or-treating, a short video promoting CDC’s National Center for Health Marketing, a feedback line to CDC avatar Hygeia Philo, a welcome message from the former CDC Director (2002-2008), Dr. Julie Gerberding, and a teleport to a hidden exhibit above the main CDC space.
