CDC’s presence in the online virtual world, Second Life, launched in August 2006. Dr. John Anderton designed the initial CDC space, using in-world tools, creating hyperlinks to CDC websites, including the MMWR, CDC.gov homepage, CDC podcasts and the Public Health Image Library, PHIL. If an actual outbreak occurred in the real world, that kept persons quarantined at home for extended periods of time, one possible venue for relaying local, health-related information could be a virtual, portable, public health department. Dr. Anderton proposed the facility, depicted here, in Second Life, which could be locally tagged, and used by local health educators, in order to reach out to participants while in the Second Life environment, and disseminating real world health information.
