Reflecting concern for children's safety, the New York City, Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) initiated a "Walk to School Program" in 2005. New York City (NYC) is a high-pedestrian activity locale. Nine out of 10 Bronx children, for example, walk to school. Besides safety concerns, the "Walk to School Program" benefits include more physical activity for children and adults in neighborhoods, less traffic and harmful emissions, reduced crime because more people are outside, and greater neighborhood resident interaction.
