Description:This is a close-up of a diphtheria skin lesion caused by the organism Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

Diphtheria is an acute bacterial disease of the tonsils, pharynx, larynx, nose and occasionally other mucous membranes, skin, conjunctivae and genitalia. The diagnosis of diphtheria is through the laboratory recovery of toxigenic C. diphtheriae.
