PHIL Image 14847

ID#:14847
Description:This hematoxylin-eosin-stained (H&E) photomicrograph of a colonic mucosa specimen revealed some of the ultrastructural changes brought on by a generalized inflammatory reaction including mucosal glands that were filled with mucin and inflammatory cells.

You’ll note the infiltration of numerous white blood cells congregating in an effort to protect the body from, in this case, unknown pathogenic agents, which may include bacteria, viruses, or toxic substances. Excessive mucin production, too, is characteristic of an inflammatory reaction, and you’ll also note that the mucosal epithelial crypts are filled with this over-production of mucin.

This image was from an article sited here:“Bacteriological studies in a patient with antibiotic associated pseudomembranous colitis”, Am. Gastroenterological Asscn., S.D. Allen; G. Dewey Dunn; D.L. Page; F.A. Wilson (Profiled Author: Stephen D. Allen), 1977, 73: 158-163
