PHIL Image 11993

ID#:11993
Description:Under a relatively-low magnification of 125X, this photomicrograph of a brain tissue sample revealed some of the histopathologic changes associated with a tissue reation due to the presence of the fungus, Bipolaris hawaiiensis, formerly known as Drechslera hawaiiensis.

The Bipolaris spp. fungi have been linked to “phaeohyphomycosis”, which is actually an over-arching grouping of fungal infections, which under histologic examination reveals the presence of dark-walled, or dematiaceous septate hyphae, and in some cases, yeast as well. Such infections can involve superficial structures such as the cornea and skin, however, when disseminated systemically, as was the case here, deeper structures can be affected including the brain, lungs, heart and bone.
